GVRR Club History

The club was started in 1974 as a round-robin club by 5 model railroaders, meeting in members’ homes until our first rented space was found in 1975 (a room rented at St. Leonards on 9-mile).  More permanent rented quarters were found in 1976 renting a Mt. Clemons building's 2nd floor (above a bar). We held our first Swap & Shop in fall 1976. In 1977 we began holding both spring and fall Swap & shops. Due to increasing rental costs we entered a purchase agreement for the current location in January 1994. A major remodeling effort took place tearing down old music practice room interior walls and replacing exterior front glass windows with the 2 x 4 studding and paneling which took about a year. Starting in late 1994 bench work was installed with the first piece of track laid in May 1995 and the first train running the entire main line with temporary power in August of 1995. There are currently about 25 active members with a max of 45 reached in 2000-2003. We paid the mortgage off about two years ago and now own the building.

The layout is in a 43 x 53 ft space with an additional 16.5 x 11 ft space for staging all totaling 2460 square ft of layout space in HO (1/87) and HOn3 scale. Additionally, there is appx. 1300 sq ft of meeting room/tool room/bathroom/storage room space. The mainline is approximately 340 ft of main line with 4 branch-lines, to Chesterfield Mines (appx. 33 ft), Drumond Bay (appx. 215 ft including helix), Utica Industrial (appx. 62 ft to power plant), Old Haven and Ontario (appx. 90 ft to Ontario freight ferry). Total of main and branch runs = appx. 740 ft.

An operating session can consist of anywhere from 1-2 trains to several dozen over about three hours keeping as many as 20 - 24 operators busy at one time if maxed out.
